Provincial legislature of Upper Canada demands the establishment
of a District Grammar School. |

School opens in the centretown area at the corner of Waller and
Daly with 40 paying students. |

School is one of the first to admit girls, ten years before the
province makes it mandatory. |

Ontario legislature passes a revolutionary new educational act:
elementary schools are now clearly distinguished from secondary schools.
Additionally, high schools are clearly distinguished from collegiates.
High schools were to offer a general education which would include
commercial subjects and the study of agriculture while collegiate
institutions were expected to offer classical, academic subjects in
order to prepare students for university. Lisgar is classified as
a collegiate. |

Ottawa Collegiate Institute is built where Lisgar presently stands.
At the time, it was located well outside city limits. |
| 1892 |
Lisgar becomes the first public secondary school in Ontario to hire
a female teacher. |
| 1957 |
Lisgar becomes the first school in Ontario to introduce a special
program to meet the needs of gifted students. |
